How to Wrap Canvas around Stretcher Bars
If you are looking into make a print to go around a canvas frame, you probably need to know how to assemble everything. The process isn’t complicated, but it can seem a bit overwhelming if you have no references to abide by. That is what this article is here for. One of the first things you have to do is gather all of your materials. Choose the kind of canvas roll that will best suit your print, be it matt, gloss, or satin finished. Also select the size of stretcher bars that you will need. The only other part that should be required is a staple gun, though canvas pliers may also be beneficial.
Once you have your materials set out, your next step will be to set up the canvas stretcher frame. Get the stretcher bars set up on the floor so that they make up the desired square or rectangle. Then just tap them in place. They should remain secure. It might be nice to use some tape on the corners as well just to ensure that everything is secure. If one part is having a tough time getting in, tap it gently with a rubber hammer. Be careful not to dent the wood.
The next step is to take the canvas and put it over the assembled stretcher. Cut the canvas so that there is enough of an overhang to wrap around the sides. There is no problem if you have a little excess because that is something that you can always trim afterwards. This is where the stapling will begin. Start at the centre of one side of the canvas and put a staple in the back of the stretcher bars. Then go to the opposite side and do the same thing. Proceed to the other centres.
Once the centres have been stapled down, take the canvas and continue stapling around. Do the same basic staple job to each side. This means that you work your way gradually to the corners of the canvas stretcher frame to prevent tension. Once you hit the corners, fold them over nicely and staple accordingly. Then you should have a completely assembled print. If you use water proof materials, your canvas should maintain its look for many years in the future. It may be best to keep your prints out of the sun because some fading can occur. Other than that, just enjoy!
